About Aberdulais
Aberdulais, a small village nestled in the Neath Valley in South Wales, is a place rich in natural beauty and industrial heritage. One of the most captivating sights is the Aberdulais Falls, a powerful waterfall formed where the Dulais River meets the River Neath. The falls have not only sculpted a dramatic landscape but have also played a key role in the area’s industrial past. Once the site of a tinplate works, the falls were harnessed for water power, and today visitors can still explore the remnants of the old industrial buildings that surround them.
Managed by the National Trust, the Aberdulais Tin Works and Waterfall site offers an educational and scenic experience. As you walk through the restored remains of the 19th-century tinworks, interpretive displays tell the story of Wales’ industrial revolution and the lives of those who worked in the tin industry. One of the site’s most impressive features is the giant waterwheel, one of the largest still in operation in Europe, which demonstrates how water was used to power the mills.
Beyond the historical attractions, Aberdulais is a gateway to some beautiful walking and cycling routes in the surrounding countryside. The Neath Canal towpath is ideal for a peaceful walk, and the lush greenery, birdlife, and river views provide a welcome escape into nature. The village is also close to the Vale of Neath, often called "Waterfall Country" due to its abundance of scenic cascades and woodland walks.
For those interested in photography or painting, the combination of natural beauty and industrial ruins makes Aberdulais particularly inspiring. Whether you’re drawn by the history, the landscape, or just the peaceful sound of rushing water, Aberdulais offers a unique and memorable experience in the heart of South Wales.
